For many centuries, in a small town on the southern border of Europe, people have been worshipping a statue of a black Jesus. 19-year old Edward from Ghana, guest of the refugee centre which is the subject of great debate in the village, asks to carry the statue in the annual procession and to stand next to the locals that bear its cart. The community is divided. On a journey exploring the source of fear and prejudice against “the others”, the inhabitants of this small European village are called upon to question their own identity, starting with the very icon of their own belief: a black Jesus.

Il film racconta le vicende di un bambino che diviene uomo sullo sfondo di una città come Palermo dipinta a tinte forti, ma sempre straordinariamente suggestiva. Un riscatto personale, quello del protagonista, che avviene nonostante le innumerevoli avversità che la vita gli presenta.

Il 6 gennaio 1980, a Palermo in Via della Libertà, appena entrato in auto insieme alla moglie, due figli e la suocera per andare a messa, un killer si avvicinò al suo finestrino e uccise Piersanti Mattarella a colpi di pistola. Nel luogo dove è avvenuto l’omicidio, in Via della Libertà tra il numero civico 135 e il 137, è stata posta una targa in suo ricordo. Inizialmente l’infame atto fu considerato un attentato terroristico, poiché subito dopo il delitto arrivarono rivendicazioni da parte di un sedicente gruppo neo-fascista. Pur nel disorientamento del momento, il delitto apparve però anomalo per le sue modalità, portando il giorno stesso lo scrittore Leonardo Sciascia ad alludere a “confortevoli ipotesi” che avrebbero potuto ricondurre l’omicidio alla mafia siciliana.
